Julius Kalmar

Julius Kalmar has been a student of legendary conductor and teacher Hans Swarowsky, whose students include Zubin Mehta, Claudio Abbado, Mariss Jansons, among others. He continues to carry the great tradition of Hans Swarowsky and has also been a pupil of Sergiu Celibidache.
Julius Kalmar, born in Romania, is a German citizen.
He has served as Corrépétiteur of the State Opera of Bucharest, Romania (1967-1970) and as Principal Conductor of the State Theatre of Aachen, Germany (1970-1973), the State Theatre of Mainz, Germany (1976-1981) and Volksoper in Vienna, Austria (1983-1988).
In addition he has toured extensively as conductor in Europe, Asia and South America.
Julius Kalmar has served as assistant to Karl Österreicher (the successor of Hans Swarowsky) in the Orchestral Conducting Department of the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst of Vienna (1981-1995), where he was a faculty member (1995-2010).
Simultaneous he was Director of the Opera Workshop Class and several years Dean of the Lyric and Opera Division at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg (1995-2008).
Julius Kalmar has given numerous lectures and master classes at the Wiener Meisterkurse, Austria (1982-1997), in Italy, Argentina, Taiwan, Hungary, Greece and has been jury member of international music competitions worldwide.
Since 2009, every summer he comes to Verona as professor of conducting masterclass for OperAverona.
